How we became “Team Liam” written by Liam’s Godmother
What began as a “rally” gift for Baby Liam and his family in the early days of his life, turned into an incredible show of support, compassion and strength from people near and far.
On July 27th 2012 Liam Jenner Schumacher was welcomed into this world by his incredible family, his “team”. Mom (Jen) Dad (Lance) brothers (Logan and Luke) and sister (Jordyn).
Unfortunately Liam was born with multiple medical issues including, but not limited to, Noonan Syndrome, pulmonary hypertension, heart defects and Leukemia. Just fifteen hours after his birth Liam was put on ECMO (a complete heart and lung bypass)
As I watched his family gather into his room to be by Liam’s side I was truly in awe at their strength and courage. Looking at the five of them I saw the epitome of a “Team”. Liam being the fighter and his family “rallying” for him.
In the days and months to come Liam’s “team” grew bigger and stronger with people near and far.
While on a family vacation to Disney World in Orlando, FL a woman inquired about the Team Liam t shirts and informed us she had followed Team Liam on facebook, all the way from Mississippi! Several people in the state of Texas (Jen’s hometown) are wearing Team Liam in support, along with so many others!
Liam had to surrender and give up his fight after his incredible battle since birth (and before), but his “team” continues the fight for him bringing awareness to some of the medical conditions Liam faced, to bring support financially and otherwise to a family struggling with similar situations, but most importantly to keep Liam “alive” in our hearts…forever!
The Team Liam committee began in May 2013 with 10 weeks and $100 to get our first Annual Team Liam 5k underway! Our committee currently consists of nine members who are committed to making the annual Team Liam 5k run as successful as possible! With the first year under our belt, and a huge success, we are so excited and eager to see what lies ahead in the years to come! We’ve only just begun!
It is incredible the love and support shown by so many people in so many places. If you had the privilege of meeting and knowing this little guy, you would know how strong, courageous and persistent he was. If we as his “team” can strive to be even half as strong, courageous and persistent as Liam…we have won!
